Rising Sludge | Activated Sludge Process | Wastewater Treatment Plant

 Rising Sludge

The term "rising sludge" refers to sludge that slowly rises to the surface of secondary clarifiers. When the sludge has good settling characteristics, this phenomenon can occur. The presence of gas bubbles on the clarifier's surface distinguishes rising sludge from sludge bulking, and it typically produces a fine scum on the clarifier's surface.

Rising Sludge

Causes

Rising sludge is caused by the denitrification process in secondary clarifiers.

Solutions

  • Increase the return sludge rate to reduce sludge detention time in the clarifier.
  • If the return sludge rate cannot be increased, reduce the flow rate of activated sludge to the problematic clarifier.
  • Increase the speed of the clarifier's sludge collection mechanism.
  • Increase the wasting rate to reduce the MCRT.
