 Gravity Belt Filter Thickeners

A gravity belt filter thickener works on the same principle as a gravity belt filter press, but there is no pressing action.

Polymer is usually added to sludge before it is thickened with a gravity belt filter thickener. The sludge is then applied to the gravity belt filter, where free water drains through small openings along the length of the belt. When it has completed its journey along the length of the belt, it is removed and sent to the next sludge treatment process or storage at the treatment plant.

Gravity belt thickener operators should be concerned about the quality of the filtrate and the dryness of the thickened sludge. The most common issue is washing out, which occurs when large amounts of water carry over with the thickened sludge as a result of improper belt drainage. When washing out occurs, several items should be checked:

  • Dosage of polymers
  • Loading by hydraulics
  • loading of solids
  • The belt's speed
  • Equipment for belt washing
