pH AND ALKALINITY
A number of wastewater treatment reactions are pH dependent. The pH of a substance is defined as the inverse of the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions. As a result, although the relationship is not linear, when the concentration of hydrogen ions is high, the pH is low, and when the concentration of hydrogen ions is low, the pH is high. A low pH condition is considered acidic, while a high pH condition is considered basic, or alkaline.
