 Glossary of Terms and Acronyms

  • Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) is a term that refers to the process of removing nutrients from the environment (typically nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater).
  • BOD stands for Biochemical Oxygen Demand.
  • When compared to BNR, ENR - Enhanced Nutrient Removal - provides a higher level of treatment.
  • F/M is the food-to-microorganism ratio.
  • MCRT stands for Mean Cell Residence Time.
  • MLSS stands for Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids.
  • MLVSS is an abbreviation for Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids.
  • NH3-N – Ammonia nitrogen in wastewater formula.
  • NO2 – Nitrite in wastewater formula.
  • NO3 – Nitrate in wastewater formula.
  • SBR stands for Sequential Batch Reactor, a type of activated sludge treatment system that treats wastewater in batches.
  • Sludge Age – The theoretical age of the solids in the system under aeration, calculated in the same way as MCRT.
  • The Sludge Volume Index (SVI) is a metric that shows how likely activated sludge solids (aerated solids) are to thicken or concentrate during the sedimentation/thickening process.
  • Total Nitrogen is abbreviated as TN.
  • WAS stands for Waste Activated Sludge, and it refers to the amount of sludge (or bio solids) that is removed or wasted from the system.
